Word + Carr Design Group (WCDG) is an award-winning landscape architecture design/build firm led by principals Mark Word and Sarah Carr.  Formerly known as Mark Word Design, WCDG draws upon wide experience and training in several disciplines, including horticulture, architecture, landscape architecture, and studio art.

By studying meaning, distance, time, and place, our design practice focuses on the thread of landscape connecting public and private life, the natural world and the built environment.  In our roles as landscape contractor and garden maintenance provider, our ability to realize fine detail at a high level of craft is balanced with the patience to observe the natural growth of gardens over time and capitalize on unforeseen opportunities.

From design to construction, our communicative and collaborative process involves clients, architects, consultants, and builders to foster ingenious solutions and unexpected expressions of beauty.

For over fifteen years, our Austin-based firm has engaged in residential, hospitality, institutional, and civic projects in the U.S. and abroad, enjoying steady growth and recognition.

Mark Word
Principal, Owner

Mark Word’s interest in art, graphic design, and botany has led to a 15-year career designing commercial and residential landscapes. The work of his Austin-based company has been featured in national publications and is noted for its sensitivity to regional character. Word + Carr Design Group continues to collaborate with renowned architects to develop a unique vision of the relationship between landscape and architecture.

Sarah Carr, ASLA
Principal, Owner

Sarah spent the first four years of her career designing thoughtful urban houses, drawing on her education as an architect and hands-on construction experience.  Given to artistic leanings and a deep love of nature it now seems inevitable that Sarah’s focus would transition to landscape. For over a decade, Sarah has led Word + Carr Design Group.  Her attentive design skills coupled with a keen understanding of construction sequencing offer an invaluable source of inventive ideas and practical strategies.

Jennifer Knott, PLA
Senior Associate, Studio Manager

After receiving her Master’s in Landscape Architecture from the University of California Berkeley’s College of Environmental Design, Jennifer began her 14-year practice in northern California, where she worked primarily on public open space projects. She has also worked closely with universities to create design guidelines for long-term planning and implementation. Since moving to Austin in 2011, Jennifer has shifted her practice focus to residential design-build. She loves working closely with clients to find the perfect marriage of function and beauty for their landscape and to help them see their vision come to life.

Genevieve Buentello
Associate, Project Manager

Genevieve’s interest in landscape is rooted in a strong connection to land as well as her passion for art and form.  With a background in fine arts and landscape architecture, she believes in exploring design through drawing and study with respect to the myriad layers of context present in every site. She brings 10 years of residential and commercial design experience to the table and encourages a collaborative process with clients and other design professionals.  She rejoices in tactile juxtapositions and has a penchant for exotic plants and animals.  Besides landscapes, Genevieve enjoys making art, nature hikes, gardens, and travel.

Jamin Pablo, PLA
Project Manager

As a licensed landscape architect in Texas with close to ten years of professional experience, Jamin has overseen the design, management and implementation of various domestic and international landscape types ranging in scale and complexity. Jamin’s background in ecology as well as landscape architecture gives him a unique set of tools needed to produce creative and environmentally sensitive design solutions. He is deeply invested in the special role that landscape, plants and details can play in creating a sense of place and memorable experiences.
