Mark Word founded Mark Word Design in 2002 after spending several years designing gardens and crafting ceramics in Austin and Los Angeles.

Sarah Carr joined the studio in 2007 and became partner six years later. Prior to her career in landscape design, Sarah devoted her time to the practice of architecture and residential construction.

In 2018, the firm changed its name to Word + Carr Design Group in order to accurately reflect the company’s leadership and signal its growing reach and expertise.

From design to construction, our communicative and collaborative process involves clients, architects, consultants, and builders to foster custom solutions and unexpected expressions of beauty.

For over 20 years, our Austin-based firm has engaged in residential, hospitality, institutional and public projects in the U.S. and abroad, enjoying steady growth and recognition. While our construction and garden service offerings remain grounded firmly in Austin, our design-build experience informs life-cycle thinking on all of our design projects.

We are able to offer landscape management tools to owners and operations teams prior to launch of a new property, as we are able to design maintenance plans, watering budgets, staffing recommendations and seasonal schedules in response to staffing level, budget, and very high sustainability and ecological standards.
